Week 1, Lesson 2

We had another great lesson today!  We reviewed the story of Mini Mermaid for the girls who missed it on Sunday.  We also narrowed down our team name to two options which we will vote for on Wednesday, and added a few rules to our Mermaids rules list.

Up next was a fun game of telephone!  We started with a complex message - "The Mermaids went on a trip to Cleveland and ran in a 10k race.  They all finished in less than 55 minutes."

The girls ran back & forth to coach Karin, told her the message, then came back and told the next team member.

Karin wrote each message down so that we could see the transition of the message along the way. When everyone was done, the message was pared down to "The Mermaids all ran in a 10k run and they finished in 15 minutes!"

The girls had a lot of giggles over that game. We used the ideas of gossiping and social media to demonstrate the power of words, and how if we post something on Facebook, for example, or send a text message on a phone, it may sound one way to us, but completely different to someone else.

After the game of telephone the girls did their stretches in preparation for the workout.

They did their inch worms...

And jumping jacks...

And then they ran!  The workout for today was to keep moving for 20 minutes.  We had the girls keep track of how many laps they could get done in 20 minutes as a baseline run.  These girls are all great athletes, they barely walked, and everyone ran at least 6 laps (a mile and a half!).  I found it quite impressive for their first week.

After the run the girls did a sketch in their journal of themselves before their baseline run, and after, and wrote a bit about how they felt before and after running.

Here's a great example of what I love to hear - after her run she felt happy, cool, and motivated to run again.  Yay!!

See you next time!
